Umpiring
So you think you know the rules?
Even if you don’t umpire, all players should be aware of the rules of hockey in order to get enjoyment from the game.
Have a look at the England Hockey website and have a go at the online rules test. Designed to educate through video clips and straightforward written explanation, this is a must for all players, coaches, umpires and spectators. It’s free and you can’t fail the test!
And if you’re not already an umpire and you did well – how do you fancy starting on the umpiring ladder? The Club needs umpires to officiate at all levels right up from our Under 10 teams.
The Umpire Pathway
As a new or inexperienced umpire, the Level 1 Umpire Award course is the course for you. This will give you an excellent introduction to umpiring hockey and will equip you with many of the skills and confidence to do so effectively. There is no assessment on the course. You will be able to build up your experience by umpiring training matches, junior fixtures, friendly matches and our lower league fixtures (when you are confident).
When you are ready you can then ask to be assessed. As a competent Level 1 Umpire you will then be able to umpire in higher leagues.
You may prefer to start at the Introduction to Umpiring level - aimed at those with little or no hockey experience and juniors, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to umpire junior fixtures.
Courses are currently being delivered online - so you can complete in the comfort of your own home! There are lots of 2 hour courses available - click here for details. Please contact Emma Hulme, our Umpire Coordinator, if you are interested in completing the course.
