Match Report | This top of the table clash was an eagerly-awaited fixture! With Exe top on 20 points and Buccs 2nd on 19, there was a great deal to play for. The match was high-paced from the start, with Exe getting a quick early break and gaining a penalty corner within the first 5 minutes. Captain Kelly Luscombe opened the scoring with a great rebound and follow up shot, that left the Buccs defence asking questions of one another. Play settled with both teams getting some good attacking runs through the midfield, but it was Bridie who extended the lead to 2-0 at the 20 minute mark. Both Becky and Kat looked dangerous from midfield, making some excellent runs and showing great fitness. Towards the end of the first half, Buccs got into the Exe D and looked dangerous. They won a penalty corner at the half time whistle, which was converted; Exe’s llead was reduced to just 1 goal. Manager Jackie Shute observed and put right issues with the Exe press, helping Exe to suppress the Buccs attack. Emma and Helen Bray ensured the Exe defence were solid and denied Buccs the opportunity to get into scoring positions. Eagles never looked tested in the second half, confidently dealing with the few strikes she encountered. Meanwhile, better linking play through the midfield and forward line, including great runs from Laura, showed why Exe were top of the league! Goals from Whitty and Nicole sealed Exe’s victory, with the game finishing 4-1. Player of the match was shared between 3 players, demonstrating the great teamwork that led to the Exe win. (Becky, Emma and Helen.) Exe are both excited and confident going into the clash with Yate next weekend. |
